Jonathan Brandis: Can You Love Him As A Bad Boy?
Teen Beat, April 1994
Here's Jonathan trying to get the hang of being a cartoon voice without banging his head on the microphones.
Practically since Jonathan Brandis appeared on the scene, he's been christened "the boy next door" or "the all-American good guy." His old friend from Danbury, Connecticut, Blossom star Jenna von Oy, sums up the general consensus of Jonathan by saying: "He's still a sweetheart, the same person I knew when I was little."
The Dark Side
But would you believe the actor who showed his "feminine" side in Ladybugs, and wins the hearts of girls everywhere each week as Lucas on seaQuest DSV, has a secret longing to flex his acting wings and play the bad guy?
"Bad guys are twice as interesting," explains the blond-haired, blue-eyed Jonathan, "In the future, I'd love to be a bad guy in a [live-action] film."
Well, the future is here-sort of. Besides his sea-duties on Sunday nights, Jonathan has joined the Saturday morning cartoon clan as the voice of evil magician
"Mozenrath" in Disney's Aladdin. "Mozenrath is a great evil wizard," Jonathan told us, "the complete opposite of Aladdin.... He conjures up enough trouble to make Aladdin's life a living hell. It's really fun."
Toon Time
Jonathan is having a ball playing Mozenrath and he loves being the voice of a cartoon character. "It's a totally new experience for me," he says.
Actually, Jonathan could be head of publicity for Disney's Aladdin—he just can't stop talking about it! "It's a great cartoon," he says, "and there are kids playing kids, which rarely happens. Usually in car-toons, the actors providing the voices are much older than the young characters they are playing."
Oops, Did I Do That?
"It's very different from seaQuest," explains Jonathan of his Mozenrath duties. "It happens really quickly. Plus, it's a great workout for your voice. At first, I found myself doing a lot of body movements with the voice, and the director had to tell me to stand still because my face kept bumping the microphone. Or I would get too close to the mike which would make my lines really loud."Eventually Jonathan learned how to work as a cartoon voice and he's been having fun with it ever since! What's even better is that his fans love this "other side" to his personality, too – tons of fan mail proves that. Bad boys are lovable, too!

Jeff Buckley
Dave Simpson, Melody Maker, 9 April 1994
DESPITE WHAT WE read in the live pages, many gigs these days are sterile, perfunctory affairs. Bands arrive, playing the roles they're comfortable with and the music that suits a career, and we applaud wildly out of numb obligation – maybe because we've forgotten what it feels like to be astonished. Go see Jeff Buckley, however, and the chances are you'll be left staggered, awestruck and drained by electrifying flashes of guitar virtuosity and his amazing, heart-wrenching Voice.
You won't have felt so purified in years.
"I feel it and wanna go there," says Buckley of his refreshing intuitive, spontaneous vocal style.
"Every feeling has an articulation. You know when you get drunk or you try Ecstasy for the first time, and all your secrets come tumbling out? That's what it's like every night.
"Sometimes people will fucking hate it and walk out but I still feel... connected. I just sing what I feel. Emotions are very hard for people to handle. The Greeks made up gods and goddesses around their emotions, and gave their names and faces and had relationships with them. We don't have that, we have therapy. Which ain't bad. I love therapy. But generally people think they're just meat and that emotions visit on them like in-laws. I've never felt like that."
Jeff is the son of Tim Buckley, who confronted audiences with a similar spiritual barrage in the '60s/early '70s and died in 1975. Jeff met him only once, and hasn't come to terms with the rejection. Ask him about his dad and the best you'll get is an ambivalent shrug, and the insistence that his childhood with his musical mother and mechanic stepfather is much more important. Ask him about politics, poverty, Dylan or Duke Ellington and he'll talk you into the floor. Somehow, conversation always comes back to music.
"I write mostly personal poetry," he urges. "From dreams, or sometimes I'll wake up in love."
Does Jeff Buckley ever feel that some weird trick of destiny or genetics has cast him in a similar role to that of his father, some 25 years before?
"No," he spits instantly. "I get it from my mother."

Death Metal #4
Enjoyable and satisfying.
"You just gave me a reason to go on living!"
So much to enjoy here: The script's use of the Mys-TECH characters, the planet's clueless inhabitants, DM's renewed interest in living, etc. Also, the final destination of the bomb was hilarious. Really made me laugh. Fun storytelling from cover to cover.
The final page left me primed. I could totally read a DEATH METAL ongoing series. (Even if Bareknuckles reminds me to much of Killpower.)

John Royle (4 of 4).

happy birthday aran!!! have some inarizaki hcs let's go
back when they first played shiratorizawa aran didn't know what to do bc tendou kept yelling weird shit at him and aran was, quite honestly, frightened for his life
tendou: "watch this i'm going to intimidate their ace so hard he won't be able to play properly and we'll win!" semi: "okay, what are you going to - " tendou, putting his hands around his mouth for the whole stadium to hear: "HEY NUMBER EIGHT, GET READY FOR ME TO PISS IN YOUR PANTS" semi: "dude what the fuck"
the twins are SO ready to fight and they probably would have if kita hadn't stepped in
kita didn't even have to do much he just stared down tendou with all the energy of "your most respected/favorite teacher is disappointed in you and you're going to cry bc of it" and tendou backed off
(for all of five minutes. then he started dumping on akagi but akagi gives what he gets so what the hell, kita let it slide)
this might be considered bad sportmanship tbh but it's funny as fuck so whatever
LMAO WAIT SORRY LOSING MY SHIT AT THE THOUGHT OF SHIRABU AND ATSUMU ON THE COURT AT THE SAME TIME THE IMPLICATIONS ARE SO FUCKED OH MY GOD
okay sorry back to the normal schedule
i think bc aran's the ace and court captain people try to follow his lead at school or ask him to make the final decision on things and such and he HATES it. it's soooooo much pressure and he really doesn't want to disappoint anyone!!
like no he does NOT want to be the tiebreaker for what their class should do during the school festival he just wants to walk around and eat a crepe. no he does NOT want to choose what paint color looks best for remodeling the garden fence why the fuck are you even asking him he's part of the volleyball club!!!! he always texts kita for help when this happens LMAO
and even if he DOES mess up the other students are always like, "ah, of course ojiro-san would do that!! he totally did that on purpose!! of course it's because [insert farfetched excuse here]!! why didn't we think of that either!!!"
if anyone's ever seen or read handa-kun (light-hearted prequel/spin-off to barakamon <33) it's basically that LMAO
kita's surprisingly good at telling scary stories
not just that but he tells normal stories in such a way that most people think he's telling a scary story first and then he says some totally mundane shit like "and that's why we no longer store our towels under the bed" and people are like. damn guess i'm not doing that either!!!
every day suna texts his sister one funny zero-context quote from practice. his sister has collected all of these and set up a twitter account for them.
gin thinks atsumu is going to get his ass kicked for not knowing when to shut the fuck up. atsumu thinks he's going to get his ass kicked because osamu paid someone to do it
osamu insists he wouldn't tho bc then he'd just do it himself for free
akagi, aran, and kita tease oomimi for being younger than them and make a running joke of ruffling his hair like a little kid which oomimi actually finds really comforting bc people usually shy away from being tactile with him. like guys come on oomimi is a sweetheart i love him so much

Vis a vis the age of accountability and begging God to kill you before your eighth birthday so you remain sinless:
There is a doctrinal basis for the idea that children are sinless until the age of eight. It's the reason Mormons don't do infant baptism and consider it a mockery toward God; and it's the reason eight is the age at which a non-convert baptism is set.
Take, for example, this quote:

(The Special Status of Children, April 1994)
See also D&C 137:10, below:

These ideas did not come from nowhere. Rather, they were written in the baseline doctrine of the Book of Mormon and Doctrine & Covenants, expanded on in supplemental doctrine like the above-referenced talk, and passed down to us in those years prior to the age of eight.

Kurt Donald Cobain // m. 5 April 1994 // by Les Guzman
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Spin magazine contacted us with an assignment to photograph Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. The shoot would take place in their Los Angeles home and would include their newborn daughter Frances Bean. We can't recall having any conversations with Spin prior to the shoot but, recognizing the intense scrutiny that had been swirling about them at that time, we knew we would be photographing them not so much as two famous musicians but as a family." - Les Guzman // 5 April 2024

A Son's Star Trip: Jeff Buckley: Borderline, London
Keith Cameron, New Musical Express, 2 April 1994
"I NEED A Guinness," murmurs Jeff Buckley, after completing one of his many audacious sorties on the collective heartstring this evening. "And I really mean that." One further outbreak of massed nail-chomping later, a glass of the black gold is dutifully placed at Jeff's feet.
Though he might not quite have the audience eating out of his hands, to be drinking out of their pockets — especially at West End prices — is a considerable feat nonetheless. The only surprise is that Jeff Buckley didn't just spirit the stuff out of the barrel, into the glass and onto the stage himself. For in virtually every other department, the Son Of Tim serves warning that the deified status his father achieved in death already belongs to him in this vividly alive life.
Perhaps the ultimate confirmation of Buckley Jr's talent is that relatively soon people will have given up talking about him in reference to pater. Without doubt, the voices share many qualities, chiefly the angel wings that lend their flights through all manner of octaval impropriety a quite effortless ease. Yet while Tim had that ghostly quaver hinting at the darkness to come even in his earliest work, Jeff's is a far more streetwise instrument; gorgeous, exquisitely expressive, but definitely of this world.
That said, his opening gambit tonight would have done dad proud: two minutes or so of unaccompanied free-form moaning that wrench the palms immediately into perspiration overdrive. Has this hippy got his shit together, we wonder, as visions of all those hours never spent in jazz cellars marvelling at the sheer self-indulgence of the human larynx fog the brain. But for the remainder of this session, at least, Jeff plays it straight, allowing us to marvel at the sheer drama wrought by one man, his electric guitar and a bunch of hymnal treatises on people's seemingly endless potential for f—ing up.
A scruffy-smart troubadour in the classic freewheelin' mould, the marketing department must have freaked when Jeff B appeared on its agenda. His blend of West Coast idealism and East Side hard-knocks suss lends the humanist polemic of 'Eternal Life' ("There's no time for hatred/Only questions") genuine pathos light years removed from the genre's usual trite platitudes. And when the boy picks up Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' and wrings out every last sob, you're at a loss to fathom such wisdom from such tender years.
That Guinness goes down in one, too. Pure genius would appear to get it just about right.

A riveting visual evolution of Oasis captured by Kevin Cummins and featuring Noel Gallagher in his own words.
How does a band come into being? What are the myriad forces that shape the sound, look, and identity of an emerging band? Oasis The Masterplan tells the story of how Oasis cemented their identity. At the center of this enterprise was Kevin Cummins, who was well aware of the intersection between the visual and the sonic and was brought on board to help the band find a look that fitted their sound. Drawing on the first six months of 1994, we follow Cummins as he photographs the band in various locations such as London, Manchester, and the Netherlands. Using many unseen images as well as more well-known iconic shots, Cummins guides us through the ways a band can be shaped and designed, such as the famous photographs of the Gallagher brothers in Manchester City shirts - emblazoned with the Brother logo (a Japanese electronics company) which helped provoke worldwide interest in the band. With input from Noel Gallagher, we see how they played with fashion, were taught how to pose, and present themselves as they approached the summer of that year when their first album, Definitely Maybe was released on August 29th. The story from that moment on is well-known and this book reveals just how effective the masterplan was to get them to that point.
